Lead Line Equitation on the Flat (Ages 8 and Under)
This class is the perfect first introduction to the show ring for our youngest riders, focusing entirely on safety, poise, and presentation while being securely guided by an adult handler.
Purpose and Focus:
Rider Age: Specifically for riders 8 years and under.
The Basics: The class focuses on establishing the correct English position at the walk and often the slow trot.
Judge's Eye: The judge looks for a secure, balanced seat, quiet hands, and a tidy appearance. The primary goal is for the child to look comfortable and happy on the pony.
The Handler's Role: The pony is led at all times by a handler, who is responsible for the pony's control, safety, and proper rail etiquette.
This class emphasizes positive first experiences and the overall neatness of the rider, pony, and handler team.
Lead Line Equitation Over Fences Ground Poles (Ages 8 and Under)
This specialized class introduces the youngest riders to the concept of riding a course. It uses ground poles to safely simulate obstacles while maintaining the necessary safety of the lead line.
Purpose and Focus:
Rider Age: Specifically for riders 8 years and under.
First Course: Riders are led over a simple course of 4-6 poles laid flat on the ground at the walk or slow trot. This teaches the child to look ahead and guide the pony straight toward the obstacle.
Position Over Poles: The judge looks for the child to maintain their balance and often demonstrates a developing "two-point" or light seat as the pony steps over the poles.
Safety Priority: The handler maintains the lead line and is responsible for ensuring the pony walks quietly and accurately over every pole.
This class is the ideal low-pressure step for building the balance and confidence needed before attempting cross-rails.
Lead Line Western Horsemanship (Ages 8 and Under)
This class is designed to introduce young Western riders to the ring, focusing on the correct Western Horsemanship position and basic control while showcasing the team's presentation.
Purpose and Focus:
Rider Age: Specifically for riders 8 years and under.
Western Form: The judge evaluates the child's basic Western seat—secure in the saddle, hands held quietly, and feet properly placed in the stirrups.
Maneuver Introduction: The class is performed at the walk only. Riders may be asked to perform a simple square halt or back up a few steps, demonstrating a response to the quietest of cues.
The Team: Handlers lead the pony (or small horse) and ensure the pony's manners are impeccable. The overall neatness of Western attire is also assessed.
This class rewards the child who demonstrates poise, excellent basic form, and control while enjoying their ride in the Western saddle.
