Beginner Equitation on the Flat: Walk Only 🐴

This class is the perfect foundation for new riders to master the basics of correct mounted position at the slowest gait. Our focus is entirely on the rider, building confidence and consistency in the saddle.

Judge's Focus: Correct Position

The judge looks exclusively at the rider's form and effectiveness while walking. Key requirements include:

  • A Balanced Seat: Sitting securely and centrally in the saddle.

  • Proper Leg Position: Heel down, with quiet, consistent calf contact.

  • Soft, Steady Hands: Maintaining light, consistent contact with the horse's mouth.

This is an ideal class for gaining experience before moving up to the trot. Master the walk, and you master the foundation of all mounted equitation!

Novice Equitation on the Flat: Walk & Trot

This class is designed for the rider who has mastered the walk and is now focusing on balance, rhythm, and accuracy at the trot. It is a crucial step in developing an independent seat and effective aids.

Judge's Focus: Diagonals and Control

The judge evaluates the rider's ability to maintain a correct and functional position at both gaits, with special attention to:

  • Posting Diagonals: Correctly identifying and changing the diagonal at the posting trot (rising and sitting with the correct front leg). This must be performed seamlessly.

  • Balance in Motion: Maintaining a secure seat and steady lower leg while the horse is moving.

  • Smooth Transitions: Executing smooth, prompt transitions between the walk and the trot on cue.

This is the perfect proving ground for riders ready to show correct form and intelligent horsemanship while incorporating the trot.

Intermediate Equitation on the Flat: Walk, Trot, & Canter

This is the class for the polished rider who is confident and proficient in all three gaits. Intermediate Equitation demands textbook form, subtle communication, and the precise execution of a complex pattern.

Judge's Focus: Leads and Pattern Precision

The judge is scrutinizing the rider's overall effectiveness and elegance, focusing on:

  • Canter Leads: Correctly picking up and maintaining the proper lead at the canter, demonstrating accurate lead changes (simple or flying, depending on show rules).

  • Rhythm and Pace: Maintaining an even, consistent rhythm and pace at all gaits, showing complete control.

  • Pattern Execution: Performing a drawn pattern that often includes specific figures, transitions, and length of stride changes.

Riders in this class must demonstrate the subtle finesse and strong position required to compete successfully across all three gaits.
