A. In Hand / Showmanship

Showmanship classes are open to all breeds.

In Hand Attire (Showmanship): Recommended attire for the handler is neat, clean, and professional. Full show attire (jacket, helmet/hat) is strongly recommended for highest marks on presentation, but neat and professional schooling attire is acceptable in your preferred discipline - English or Western

Showmanship Hand Position/Leading: The handler must lead the horse from the left side, holding the lead line in the right hand. The excess line should be neatly folded or loosely coiled in the left hand.

Halters may be leather, nylon, or rope. Bridles are an acceptable alternative for Hunter or Saddle-type presentation.

Lead Lines: Lead lines equipped with a chain are permissible, provided the chain is positioned only under the chin or over the nose. Chains may not be placed through the horse's mouth.

Spurs and riding whips are prohibited.

When presenting your horse for inspection, the judge or camera will video each side (left, front, right, and back) for several seconds, ensuring the judge has enough time to evaluate each view. The camera can either move about the horse, or if using a pivo or similar the handler can move the horse to show each side to the camera.

B. Western

Western Attire (Ridden Classes): Recommended show attire includes a Western hat or helmet, a long-sleeved collared Western shirt, and dark, well-fitted jeans or show slacks. Chaps are optional but permitted. Open Show attire refer to Section IV.

Bits: All standard Western bits are permitted (snaffle, curb, spade, etc.), regardless of horse age. Bitless equipment (side pulls, bosals with mecate) is also acceptable.

Hand Usage: Non-leverage bits and bosals permit one or two hands. Leverage (curb) bits require the use of one hand only.

Reins/Curbs: Split reins or romals are required. Leverage bits must be paired with a curb chain or strap of a minimum 1/2 inch width. The curb must be flat leather, or a single/double chain.

Traditional show attire includes a hunt coat of a conservative color (navy, black, dark green, or gray) and light-colored breeches (buff, tan, or white). Open Show attire refer to Section IV.

A bridle with a cavesson is mandatory (Figure 8 and flash cavessons permitted).

Bits: Any standard Hunt Seat bit is permitted. Double bridles (Pelham or Weymouth with bradoon) are permitted and require two reins.

Rider Focus: Tack must meet USEF equitation rules.

Riding crops are permitted but may only be applied to the shoulder or behind the girth. Misuse may result in penalties/disqualification.

Boots/Bandages in Test: Protective boots, wraps, or bandages are strictly prohibited during the performance of the judged Dressage test (per USDF/WDAA rules).

Attire: Helmet and boots are required for Dressage (Helmets encouraged for Western Dressage). Show attire is preferred but schooling attire is acceptable.

Classic Dressage requires a traditional dressage, forward seat, all-purpose, or close contact Hunt Seat saddle. Western Dressage requires a Western saddle.

Entry Advancement: Once a horse/rider combination earns 65% or higher at a level, they are required to move up (must comply with USDF/WDAA standards).

Arena Requirements

Dimensions: Arena size must be as close as possible to standard (20x40m or 20x60m, depending on the test).

Markings: Use clearly visible letters, cones, or markers to delineate test movements and corners.

Dressage tests may be called, but coaching is prohibited.

E. Gaited

Tack must conform to the appropriate riding style (Western, Hunt Seat, or Saddle Seat). Additionally, breed-appropriate tack and equipment in native dress may be worn.

Action Devices and Shoeing: Performance-enhancing action devices (e.g., chains, weighted shoes, pads, or stacks) are strictly prohibited. Shoeing must be natural and conform to accepted ethical standards for the breed.

Riders are permitted to use two hands on any bit allowed.

F. Ranch Horse

All tack must comply with the requirements detailed in the Western Tack section.

Ranch Horse Required Equipment/Attire: While not mandatory, it is recommended for Ranch Riding/Trail that the rider wear chaps or chinks. A rope (lariat) may be carried but must be secured to the saddle or horn in a safe manner.

Silver ornamentation on tack must be kept to a minimum and may be subject to penalty.

Standard horse boots are restricted to use in Ranch, Reining, and timed events.

G. Alternative Tack

Any horse/rider combination is eligible to enter. These classes are judged on effective communication, balance, control, and partnership.

Helmets are mandatory for all riders in all Alternative Tack classes, regardless of age or discipline.

Rider Attire: Riders must wear heeled boots (minimum 1/2 inch heel). General show or schooling attire is acceptable, provided the torso is covered.

Bareback pads, saddle pads, fleece pads, or blankets are permitted. Girths/cinches must be securely fastened. Cruppers and breastplates are permitted for safety.

Bitless bridles, halters, a neck rope and hackamores are allowed.

Leverage halters (e.g., control halters with a chain or leverage noseband) are strictly prohibited.

Whips/Aids: A dressage whip or a long line/lunge whip is permitted to be carried and used as an aid for directional cues, encouragement, or maintaining distance, similar to its use in Liberty training. However, the whip must never be used to strike the horse excessively or abusively. Excessive or aggressive use of the whip will result in penalty or disqualification.

H. Trail

Trail classes are open to all breeds.

Handler may wear attire neat and professional schooling attire, acceptable in your preferred discipline - English or Western.

The arena should be set up with obstacles that reflect the Trail class specifications.

Obstacles should be clearly visible and accessible for the judge to evaluate from the video.

Cones, poles, or markers should be used to define obstacle boundaries if needed.

Substitutes may be used in the trail class as follows:

Bridge may be substituted with a tarp or similar safe object.
